Every place looks reachable and organic to the place and made me want to explore it all.

The trees and underbrush appear too quiet to not be hiding some menace and you often feel… observed. The forest itself is a character and is rife with granular detail and dramatic framing. Ellis and Bullet take off into the forest in search of the boy. The game opens with him driving back to the town to search for a missing boy named Peter at the behest of Ellis’s friend Sheriff Lanning, who once gave him a job and a service dog named Bullet when Ellis had hit rock bottom years ago. It’s implied that he also has some history with Burkittsville, Maryland, the place where the events of Blair Witch Project occurred. The game is set in 1996 as a prequel to the film, and stars a man named Ellis, an ex-soldier and ex-law enforcement officer suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and a dysfunctional marriage. While Bloober’s latest work probably won’t convert anyone familiar with their catalogue, the good news is that longtime fans will certainly enjoy this pleasing progression of their signature horror style. Whereas Bloober’s previous games were largely walking simulators with incredible atmosphere, Blair Witch proves they are a developer growing in confidence and skill, providing more engaging level design and mechanics than ever before. Blair Witch, released in 2019, is Polish developer Bloober Games’ third major release after Layers of Fear and Observer and it is their best work yet.
